Together we're giving back to help refugee families feel welcome in their new communities.

Through the holiday season in 2016, Penguino Travel partnered with World Relief Fort Worth to welcome refugee families to Texas. For every ten Travel Boxes sold, we are giving one Welcome Box to a refugee child who is new to Texas.

Why give back to refugees?

Give Back to Texas Refugees

There are more refugees in the world today than at any other time in human history. Nearly 60 million people have been forced to flee their homes by violence or persecution, with nearly 20 million living outside their countries as refugees.

In 2016, the United States will admit 85,000 refugees, 40% of whom are children. When refugees arrive in our country, they receive help from the government and from non-profits including World Relief. In 2016, seven thousand refugees were resettled in Texas.

Why Welcome Boxes?

When a refugee family first arrives in the United States, there is so much to do to begin a new life. World Relief Fort Worth partners with faith communities across Texas to come alongside families, providing help with housing, employment and cultural adjustment. We are creating Welcome Boxes as a resource for caseworkers to use with families.

Welcome Boxes will give kids something to play with and something to do – and they will also help families know that they are welcome in our community. The boxes include small toys, simple games educational activities and art supplies. We are working with World Relief Fort Worth to design boxes that are culturally appropriate and meet a real need.

Giving Back in 2017

The first months of 2017 have brought uncertainty about the future of refugee resettlement in the U.S. In addition to a controversial executive order on immigration, the presidential administration has lowered by number of refugees allowed to resettle by more than half. This has had a devastating impact on the non-profits working with refugees. Our partner World Relief has had to close five U.S. offices and lay-off 140 staff members.

Here at Penguino, we are grieved for the thousands of families who have their hopes of a bright and peaceful future in our country dashed. We are in communication with World Relief Fort Worth to determine if giving Welcome Boxes is still the best way to help. As a business, we are evaluating how to make a difference in 2017 and beyond.
